What is Paraquat?
Paraquat is a highly toxic herbicide, applied annually to control weeks and plants in crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and tobacco. All Paraquat products are classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “restricted use” and can only be applied by certified pesticide applicators.
Research indicates that Paraquat increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Ongoing exposure to the chemical can also lead to failure of the heart, kidneys, and liver.
Over 30 countries worldwide have banned Paraquat usage, including China, Brazil, the U.K., and the European Union, but it is still legal in the United States.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a long-term, progressive disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement. Nerve cell damage in the brain causes a drop in dopamine levels, leading to symptoms that generally develop slowly over the years. An early sign of Parkinson’s disease may be a tremor in one hand. Additional symptoms may include stiffness and a loss of balance.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
The four main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are:
- Tremor or trembling in hands, arms, legs, or head
- Stiffness in the arms, legs or trunk
- Slowness of movement
- Impaired balance and coordination which may lead to falls.
If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms, we urge you to see your doctor.
Lawsuits are Currently Being Filed
Lawsuits are being filed alleging that Syngenta, Chevron, and others who manufacture, market, and distribute Paraquat are liable for causing or contributing to the development of Parkinson’s disease.
If you or a loved one developed Parkinson’s resulting from Paraquat exposure, filing a lawsuit could help pay for medical bills, lost wages, and lost earning capacity.
Pursuing a claim will also encourage herbicide manufacturers to fully test their products before launching them on the market and stop selling dangerous products altogether.
